Love & Astrology

Dating in 2022 is a strange phenomenon. We date to meet the special someone, fall in love and satisfy our inherent desire to orchestrate what nature has ordained. In the dating world how does one appear keen but cool, calm and collected all at the same time? Do not ask someone their date, place or time of birth on your first date, that’s for sure. They know the angle you are coming from. The real question is – does astrology play a part in compatibility? - raising the age-old question of nature verses nurture.

Astrological charts reflect the nature aspect of an individual. Many common explanations for personalities are dependent on environmental and exogenous factors such as one’s date and time of birth. In countries like India, marital practices and matchmaking is based on astrological charts and auspicious dates. To believe this approach would imply that all Scorpios sun signs with a Taurus rising and an Aries moon share a blanket personality type, a one-size fits all approach to personality determination.  As we all know, this is not true. For this reason, we should probably steer clear of basing our entire love life on astrological compatibility.

Everyone has a unique personality, a way of experiencing and participating in the world that is all their own. This is where nurture plays a role. Even twins with the same genetics and raised in the same environment will exhibit different personality traits from each other, and from their parents. Genetic Theory asserts that personality is passed down from parent to child. Let’s take inherited personality disorders. If personality disorders are inheritable, why not personality in general, or at least a greater predisposition to a certain personality type? If depression and borderline predispositions can be inherited, why not a predisposition to a cheerful and outgoing personality? In this argument, one would see identical twins with the same personalities, or very similar ones resulting from identical predispositions. However, this is generally not the case and there are always some variations that are not accounted for by genetics alone.  Just as there are some similarities that cannot be explained by random acts of environmental effects. Personality is difficult to determine, especially because there is not concrete place where it is stored or created; no one can really find the "personality centre" of a living being.

Life exists in paradox. There is a randomness that cannot be denied and there is an order holding it all together. All the information we can learn from astrological charts can be used as a guide. For example, looking at a moon sign is a good place to learn how someone is attached to the nurture aspect of their personality to help you understand how strong their family ties and connection to early life are. Understanding your Venus sign will help to determine your love nature and how you attract a partner. The various elements encompassed in a birth chart can explain a lot about your romantic attractions. Understanding your Venus sign and your bae-to-be’s Venus can help you find a partner who is divinely suited to your romantic needs. However, your chart is not the final word. You should consider how nurture influences the direction of your nature. Our chart shows our nature, how we respond to the world around us, but nurture is the world and outside influences that affect our responses. Living is a verb. We are all works in progress, always evolving and growing. Do not limit yourself to a ‘Scorpio who is compatible with Cancers and Pisces’. You are far more complex than an astrological chart. Life is metaphoric and your chart is a blueprint.
